About Ellis Island Photocopies

While earlier passenger arrival records (AKA ship manifests) do exist, most are for the time period of 1820-1945. For the Port of New York, Ellis Island was the receiving point for immigrants who arrived during the years of 1892-1924. For many years, only part of those records were indexed. Recently, however, a web site has been created that contains an every-name index for the Ellis Island years. By viewing that website, researchers can learn the date of arrival, the name of the ship, as well as the exact page number and line number of their ancestor's record.

For those who wish to obtain a legible photocopy of that record, I am able to provide such copies from the microfilm collection available at the Family History Library. Photocopies are made on 11 x 14" paper by using a late model Minolta copier and laser printer. That combination provides the most legible copy possible.

In order to receive such photocopies, it is necessary that you supply the name of the passenger, the name of the ship, the arrival date at Ellis Island, the page number, and the line number of the entry. When those items are provided, I will obtain a full-page photocopy for a fee of $8, which includes both pages if the manifest includes two pages, as well as shipping and handling.

The format of the manifests/passenger lists changed over the years, with more information being available in the more recent years. Basic information for all years includes the name of the shipmaster, name of the ship, ports of arrival and departure, date of arrival, name of the passenger, age, sex, occupation, and nationality. Race was included in 1903. Birthplace and physical description were added in 1906. The name and address of the immigrant's closest relative in the home country were added in 1907. Passenger information on the earlier manifests can be photocopied on a single page, while later manifests have additional columns that require two photocopy pages.

Please note that in order to be eligible for the $8 rate, the above specified information is MANDATORY. I am unable at this time to do page by page or line by line searches when the required information is not provided.
